Rebel & Barra – Our Australian Cattle Dogs in Thailand
Australian Cattle Dogs (ACDs) are energetic, highly intelligent working dogs originally bred on the vast cattle stations “Down Under.” They require both plenty of physical activity and mental stimulation. At the same time, these traits also make them excellent family companions.
This is a detailed article about Rebel and Barra, two Australian Cattle Dogs originally from Australia who now live on a farm in Thailand. They are used for breeding and have proven themselves to be loving family members in every way.
Introducing Rebel and Barra
Rebel, a female born in October 2023, is a young, spirited Australian Cattle Dog with a friendly yet alert nature. She earned her name “Rebel” for a reason: she’s lively, brave, and confidently takes the lead. Her male counterpart is Barra, born in November 2022, nicknamed “Beer Babes n Barra” – a genuine charmer with a poised demeanor.
Both dogs were born and raised in Australia, where they were purposefully socialized before being brought to Thailand together in February 2025. Rebel and Barra have since adapted wonderfully to their new environment. They live on a farm in southern Thailand near Nong Khai, serving a dual purpose – as loyal guard dogs and loving family companions.
They come from well-known Australian lines that make them ideally suited for harmonious coexistence with each other, humans, and other animals. Both dogs bring unique characteristics that make them a perfect team. Their complementary behavior, temperament, and roles form the foundation of a responsible and sustainable breeding program that prioritizes temperament and health over mere performance.
Origins of Rebel and Barra
Both dogs come from Australia, the breed’s country of origin, highlighting their authenticity. Rebel and Barra were bred by established Australian breeders with traceable, clean pedigrees and original papers. These confirm their breed status and document their ancestry, which is essential to buyers and especially valuable to other breeders.
Their bloodlines blend working traits with show qualities, giving them impressive versatility. Both have competed successfully at dog shows in Australia, winning over judges with looks, behavior, and presence. Although not initially intended for breeding, their quality, health, and compatibility have made them an ideal pair.
Key Considerations in Dog Breeding
A good breeding line is marked by several key factors: traceable, documented ancestry over generations; emphasis on health, temperament, and physical traits; and careful selection to reinforce these features.
Responsible breeding aims to preserve or enhance positive traits while reducing the risk of genetic diseases or undesirable behavior. It’s not just about looks or show wins – the goal is a stable, breed-typical dog overall.
The Australian Cattle Dog as a Breeding Dog
A strong breeding line is vital for Australian Cattle Dogs. This breed is known for intelligence, independence, high work drive, and longevity. However, without proper breeding, care, and socialization, they may become nervous or prone to health issues. Boredom or lack of stimulation can also lead to behavioral problems—a serious concern for dogs meant to be family members.

Thoughtful breeding considers physical traits as well as mental resilience, thresholds, trainability, and social behavior. Quality breeders document all health checks, use DNA testing, and select animals with balanced temperaments. Ideal pedigrees avoid inbreeding and consist of dogs proven in both family and work environments. DNA tests help identify genetic diseases, confirm ancestry, improve breeding strategies, and protect the breed's future.
Health checks include:
- DNA tests for hereditary diseases: Such as PLL (Primary Lens Luxation), PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), NCL (Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis), and congenital deafness.
- Hip X-rays (HD): Essential for active, working breeds like ACDs. Results range from A (free) to E (severely affected). Only dogs with healthy hips should be bred.
- Elbow X-rays (ED): Less common for ACDs but useful for athletic lines.
- Hearing tests (BAER): Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response.
- Blood tests: General health, liver, kidney, thyroid values, blood sugar, etc.
- Vaccination and parasite control: Including distemper, parvo, leptospirosis, regular deworming, and checks for Giardia and other parasites.
- Temperament/behavior tests: Not always mandatory but helpful for assessing social behavior and stress tolerance – vital for protective, working breeds like ACDs.
Rebel and Barra Meet These Standards
Rebel and Barra come from proven Australian lines with full documentation and internationally recognized papers. They’ve undergone genetic testing, are microchipped, and are free from hereditary diseases. Their ancestors succeeded in both show and work, reflected in their versatility. Rebel’s lineage is known for composure and trainability, while Barra brings robust, long-lived working dog traits. Their combination merges day-to-day adaptability and sociability with durability, resilience, and presence.

The breeding goal with Rebel and Barra is to pass on these exact qualities. The plan involves a small number of well-prepared litters in the right environment, aligning health, temperament, and breed-typical appearance. Rebel and Barra represent two outstanding dogs and a thoughtful, forward-looking development of the Australian Cattle Dog line in Thailand and Southeast Asia.
Mating and Breeding Potential
Though initially planned as guard and family dogs, Rebel and Barra’s immense potential for responsible breeding became clear over time:
- Both are in excellent physical condition, have balanced temperaments, and ideal traits for healthy offspring.
- The decision to breed them was made carefully considering genetics, temperament, and physical compatibility.
- They complement each other in size, coat, color, and character.
- The mating was supervised and took place under optimal conditions.
The goal is to breed puppies that reflect the breed standard while remaining suitable for everyday life. Past experience suggests litters typically contain eight healthy puppies – the average for the breed. Future litters are expected to be similar in size. The first litter, expected in late April 2025, was highly anticipated and marks the beginning of a heartfelt adventure that will remain a key part of our lives.
Our focus is on health, early socialization with people and animals, and day-to-day adaptability. The puppies will be provided with official papers, full vaccination and microchip documentation, and – if desired – breeding consultation.

Character and Behavior of Australian Cattle Dogs
ACDs are known for their intelligence, endurance, and love of work – traits strongly represented in both Rebel and Barra. They embody the breed’s typical personality but also bring individual character traits that make them especially compelling as a team.
Rebel and Barra’s Individual Traits
- Barra, the male, is a true powerhouse. He’s always on the move, very alert, and rarely misses a thing. His presence is unmistakable – not pushy, but consistently attentive and ready to respond. He’s highly responsive, curious, spirited, and needs mental and physical stimulation. Yet he’s also trainable and responsive – a dog who thrives with clear structure.
- Rebel, the female, is naturally calmer, more sensitive, and more balanced in many situations than her energetic companion. But when with Barra, she lights up: they challenge each other in playful ways and are perfectly attuned socially. Rebel is especially people-oriented, very affectionate, and gets along well with humans and other animals alike. Her loving nature, loyalty, and clear family bonds make her the ideal everyday companion.
Both dogs have a strong sense of social behavior. They are highly trainable, eager to learn, attentive, and sensitive to their surroundings. Despite strong watchdog traits, they show no unnecessary aggression. Instead, they are defined by controlled presence and an excellent ability to distinguish between normal situations and potential threats.

Their deep bond with their family, playful nature, patience with children, and ability to make independent decisions make them ideal dogs for farms, homes, and humans.
They also have experience in the show ring:
“BAZZA qualified as BEST EXHIBIT IN SHOW (R/UP) in the JUNIOR class for his title. He also earned points with multiple wins as BEST EXHIBIT IN GROUP in the Puppy and Junior classes.” – Champion Tagetarl Beer Babes N Barra
Both dogs were shown at multiple events in Australia, demonstrating their conformation, composure under distraction, and poise. Their public experience is now reflected in their confident demeanor – whether dealing with strangers, new situations, or vet visits.
Since arriving in Thailand, they’ve adapted excellently to the tropical climate. Living year-round outdoors on a spacious farm, they’ve developed strong individual personalities. They fulfill their instincts as reliable watchdogs while also being cherished family members with big hearts.
The Watchdog and the Sweetheart
Barra clearly takes on the watchdog role. He patrols the grounds daily, watching every movement and reacting immediately to approaching visitors. He’s cautious and reserved around strangers, but not aggressive. If the owner accepts the visitor, his suspicion quickly fades. His intelligence allows him to assess situations quickly; rash or impulsive behavior is foreign to him. Still, unauthorized intrusions, like fence climbing, will prompt loud barking and swift action. They would only bite in a real threat situation.
Rebel, at first glance, seems like the “sweet girl”: friendly, gentle, very affectionate, and highly social. She gets along great with children, visitors, and other animals. But her gentle nature shouldn’t be underestimated – if a stranger enters unexpectedly or Barra signals danger, she becomes instantly alert, stands protectively before the family, and responds with clear presence. Her close bond with Barra means they support each other in critical situations, like a perfectly functioning team.
Life on the Farm
Life on the farm is full of stimulation and structure: patrols, interactive play, visits from neighbors, friends, or children. There are also designated rest periods and plenty of space with shady spots for lounging. Their herding instinct sometimes shows in interactions with other animals, such as gently guiding or observing them. However, their behavior is controlled and unproblematic thanks to good guidance.

Rebel and Barra live in a natural, species-appropriate environment. Their surroundings offer both freedom and a clear daily routine. This combination of varied tasks, exercise, social interactions, and elements of safety and care allows them to live physically and mentally balanced, capable, and content lives. They benefit from ideal conditions for household and farm animals, especially for dogs of this breed.
Living with People and Children
Living with people is a natural part of Rebel and Barra’s daily lives. People of all ages live on the farm, and both dogs are fully integrated into family life. Particularly striking is their calm and patient demeanor with children. Rebel, the cheerful female, loves to play and is often curious. She enjoys observing people’s behavior, including that of children. She welcomes petting and shows great patience when playing with kids.
Barra, the male, takes on more of a watchdog role. He is the calm anchor of the two ACDs. He also enjoys being petted, tolerates closeness, and exhibits great composure. Due to his natural guarding instinct, he is always alert and closely monitors his surroundings. Barra is more reserved around strangers, which is particularly beneficial in his role as a guard dog. He primarily lives outdoors and keeps a certain distance from other animals and people. However, when trust is established, he calmly accepts the presence of others.
Calm, Respect, and Trust
Although Barra is more of an observer and sometimes keeps a bit of distance, he also shows respect and trust toward family members. Both dogs clearly recognize who belongs to the family and who doesn’t. They react alertly when visitors arrive.
A short but firm bark signals that they’re taking their responsibilities seriously. Once they realize there’s no threat, both dogs quickly calm down and return to their relaxed behavior.
Their relationship with family members is based on mutual respect. It's imperative that neither dog is overwhelmed. They have clearly defined rest periods that are strictly observed on the farm. This structure allows them to know exactly when it’s time to play or guard and when it’s time to rest. This work, play, and rest balance contributes significantly to their gentle and well-balanced character.
Health and Care of the Dogs
Rebel and Barra are in excellent health. Both dogs receive regular veterinary checkups. They are vaccinated at appropriate intervals, dewormed as needed, and consistently checked for parasites. A well-thought-out health management plan is crucial, especially in tropical regions like Thailand, where the climate can be challenging. Both dogs are microchipped and registered in an international database, ensuring identification even across national borders.
Their diet mainly consists of standard dry dog food. Fortunately, both dogs are not fussy and are generally very low-maintenance. They don’t rely on specific food brands and prefer a simple but balanced diet. They also receive fresh food made from local ingredients, providing optimal nutrition and ensuring enough energy for daily activities. This straightforward but nutrient-rich diet supports their physical health and ensures they always have enough energy to fulfill their roles on the farm.

It is crucial to emphasize that dogs fed primarily dry food must always have access to plenty of drinking water. This is especially important in Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries, where the climate can be tropical and humid. Ideally, the dogs have access to several locations with clean drinking water, just like on our idyllic farm.
Coat Care and Grooming
When it comes to grooming, both dogs are very low-maintenance. They require no special coat care, as they are naturally adapted to hot, dusty, and humid conditions. Regular brushing is enough to keep their short, dense coats in good condition. Heat stress, coat problems, or skin issues have not been a concern for Rebel and Barra, largely thanks to their robust nature and familiar environment.
Before moving to Thailand, the two lived in Humpty Doo near Darwin in northern Australia, where temperatures are even higher than in southern Thailand. The environmental conditions there are also very hot and humid. With its high humidity and tropical rains, the Thai climate is not a significant challenge for them.
Thanks to this species-appropriate lifestyle with plenty of exercise, social contact, and varied tasks, Rebel and Barra are both physically and mentally stable. This combination of excellent care and ideal living conditions ensures they have the best foundation for a healthy and long-lived breeding line. Their vitality is not just due to nature—it’s also a result of the careful and responsible care they receive on the farm.
Unique Traits and Favorite Behaviors of Rebel and Barra
While Rebel and Barra are a team, they are very different individuals. Rebel loves adventure—she enjoys exploring new corners of the farm, is always curious, and is energetic. She especially likes playing with balls or sticks and often invites other animals or people to join in. She is playful, a bit headstrong, but always in a good mood.
Barra, on the other hand, is the calmer half of the duo. He observes, reacts thoughtfully, and is the first to assess safety in new situations.
One of his standout traits is his ability to remain calm around children. He stays composed, allows petting, and doesn’t back away.
Both dogs love water—small streams, hoses, or buckets are immediately recognized as play opportunities. They are also incredibly photogenic:
Training and Activities for the Dogs
Rebel and Barra’s training is practical and grounded in daily life. Their education follows a classic approach, tailored to the farm's environment and the breed's characteristics.
Both dogs have mastered basic obedience commands like “sit” and “down,” and respond reliably to cues. Rebel is particularly eager to learn and loves picking up new tricks or tasks. She regularly engages in small mental challenges to stimulate her intelligence and keep her entertained. Barra is more of a quiet observer but reliably handles tasks like guarding entryways and accompanying the children on the farm.

Their activities involve natural tasks such as patrolling the grounds, accompanying us or visitors, play sessions, and targeted mental and physical training. Both dogs enjoy being useful and show a strong need for structure and purpose. Their training is consistent but never harsh. We’ve always emphasized positive reinforcement, clear rules, and mutual respect. This approach fosters not only good behavior but also deep trust and goodwill between humans and dogs.
Outlook and Role in Breeding
With Rebel and Barra, a very special chapter begins for us as breeders—we are not just professional breeders but true dog lovers. For us, breeding isn’t just about preserving a breed, but about creating genuine, trusting relationships between dogs and humans. These two dogs are not just part of a breeding program—they are beloved family members and true individuals who impress us daily with their loyalty, character, and enthusiasm. Their vigilance, joy, and endurance are evident in how they perform their duties on the farm while showing gentleness and affection toward people.
The first litter meant more than just a next step—it was the fulfillment of a dream. Our goal was to breed healthy, socially competent, everyday companions for animal lovers—dogs that would impress with their intelligence and willingness to work, as well as their loving nature and strong human bond.
It’s very important to us that our puppies are physically healthy, socially competent, and suitable for daily life. In the future, we want to breed dogs that thrive as family pets and in active households, on farms, at equestrian facilities, or with athletic owners.
The Motto of Our Breeding – Quality over Quantity
Breeding is paramount to us, so we place the highest value on early socialization, integration, and excellent health care. We work closely with experienced veterinarians and breeders to ensure every step is taken with responsibility and attention to detail.
We are very aware of our responsibility and choose to focus on quality, not quantity. Mass production has no place with us—instead, we aim to invest a little more into the character and well-being of each puppy in every litter.
Breeding with Heart, Responsibility, and Trust – A Long-Term Path
Our breeding philosophy is not a one-way street—we see ourselves as long-term partners for new dog owners. Transparency, trustworthy communication, and lifelong support (if desired) are natural to us. We want the people who welcome one of our puppies into their lives to feel a genuine connection to us as breeders. Our responsibility doesn’t end with the handover of the dog—on the contrary, it marks the beginning of a shared journey.
Rebel and Barra are not just dogs with papers—they are the first representatives of a new generation of Australian Cattle Dogs in Southeast Asia. For us, this is a true passion project. It’s more than a professional decision. They are an important part of our lives, and we are incredibly proud to begin a promising breeding line with them that prioritizes character, health, and well-being. We believe every animal deserves the best—and that’s exactly what we strive to deliver with every litter.
